WATERFORD Phyllis M. Matthews, 88, of Hudson River Rd. died Monday November 13, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Troy she was the daughter of Adam and Freda Olson MacAuley. She was educated in Easton and Stillwater schools and attended Troy Business College and Sage College.

Phyllis had worked for 12 years at Seaway Diving Co in Waterford and retired in 2013 at the age of 84. Prior to that she had been employed at the Albany Presbytery Office, Special Blessing Pre-School, had served as Administrator for the Rensselaer County Medical Society, was Office Manager for Dr. William Gratton, and did Respite Care for ARC. Early in her career she worked at the former Stevens & Thompson Paper Co. and John A. Manning Paper Co.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, United Methodist Women, Waterford Study Club and a former member of the Waterford Halfmoon School Board. She was a volunteer with the Community Hospice Program, a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader, a member of the Waterford Historical Society and an advisor to the Junior Historical Society. She was very active in her church having been a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and holding many leadership positions there.

Phyllis is the widow of John E. Matthews who died in 2008. She is the loving mother of Leslie Matthews Kelly (Richard) of Waterford, Rev. Jeffrey A. Matthews of East Greenbush, Christopher J. Matthews of Pleasantdale and the late Lisa Matthews Hayes. She was sister of the late Edgar MacAuley and the proud grandmother of Edgar Hayes, Krista Kelly, Laura Hayes McMillen (Matthew), Lyndsey Follette (Michael) and Erin Kelly and great grandmother of Aiden Hayes, Owen, Addison and Ainsley McMillen, Olivia Hayes, Ella and Eva Van Orden and Charles Follette. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Living Hope United Methodist Church, 126 Middletown Rd., Waterford. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Schaghticoke.

Relatives and friends may visit at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad ST., (Rte.32), Waterford on Friday from 4-8 p.m.
