Obituary for Charles E. "Charlie" Soden

Charles E. "Charlie" Soden
COLONIE Charles E. Soden passed away after a short illness on June 24, 2018 at the age of 84. He was born in Albany on February 25, 1934 to the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Stellar) Soden, and remained in the area for most of his life. He made Colonie his home with his wife in 1963, raised a family, and stayed living in the same house for 54 years until very recently. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute and went on to join his father and brothers working at the Times Union in Albany until his retirement in 1995. He was a US Army veteran, having served between 1956 and 1962. He was an avid and above average bowler for many years, accumulating quite the trophy collection, not to mention how he met his wife.

Over the years, Charlie loved watching NASCAR Races and Red Sox games, listening to all kinds of music though singing along made everyone cringe, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He liked being outdoors ā€“ tending the vegetable garden, playing whiffle ball or swimming with his kids, or just sitting and reading a book. He spent summer vacations at Lake Champlain when he was a boy and continued bringing his own kids for many years later. He loved all the family cats despite his allergies.

Charlie was married to Mary Wittemer for 32 years before her death in 1994. He is survived by their three children, Michael (Kimberly) Soden of North Port, FL; Karen (Harry) Feinberg of Durham, CT; Kevin (Kim) Soden of Waterford, NY, and; 6 grandsons (Adam, Aaron, Joshua, Zachary and Matthew Soden, and Ethan Feinberg); his brother Joseph of Albany; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother Donald.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad Street, Waterford. Interment will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home from 9-10 a,m. prior to the service. The family welcomes you to dress casually if you prefer as Charlie never liked wearing a tie!

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School (www.nd-bg.org) in honor of the sacrifices he made to provide his children with a catholic education or the Arbor Day Foundation (www.arborday.org).
