Obituary for Theresa M. Marro

TROY Theresa Mary Cerqua Marro, age 94, passed peacefully into eternal life at home on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Waterford, NY, she was the daughter of the late Vincenzo (“Jim”) and Vincenza (“Tina”) Cerqua. Theresa was educated in the Waterford school system.

She started her career at Cluett & Peabody where she met the love of her life, her husband, the late Sebastian (“Sonny”) Marro. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 47 in 1975. Theresa then devoted her entire life to raising her eight children on her own. She sacrificed much, but would never call it a sacrifice.
Much like her siblings, Theresa had a great sense of humor. Practical jokes caught her kids off guard constantly. They will especially miss her April Fools’ calls and reminders to change the clocks.
Over the years, Theresa was very involved with her church, St. Mary’s in Troy, the Troy CYO, St. Mary’s School PTA, visiting shut-ins and helping anyone who needed anything. She had dedication and compassion for others that was beyond compare. Truly our hero and angel on earth. The happiest part of her journey was raising her eight children and watching her family grow through grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Theresa is survived by her sister and best friend, Mary Ann Castle and her husband, Dick Castle; her eight children, Patti (Greg) Owens, Francie Horton (Rich Green), Debbie Berlino, Terri (Bob) Rinchik, Mary (Angelo) Miele, Tina (George) Zeh, Dominic and David Marro; her grandsons Brian, Jonathan and Charlie Owens, Jared Horton, Joseph Berlino, Christopher Rinchik and Sebastian Marro and her granddaughter, her “Dolly”, Lindsay Valenti; and her littlest treasures, her eleven great-grandchildren. She enjoyed attending their school events, sports, dance recitals, plays and concerts, and they loved having her support at each.

Other survivors include her sisters-in-law, Joan and Betty Cerqua of Waterford and Pat Marro of Leander, Texas. Theresa also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Theresa was also predeceased by her three brothers, James, Frank and Salvadore (“Tony”) Cerqua, her sisters-in-law, Ann Cerqua and Victoria Mantello and brothers-in-law, Dominic Marro, Joseph Marro and Nicholas Mantello.

The family would like to thank the staff at Samaritan Hospital Emergency Department and COVID unit, and the Rensselaer County Community Hospice for their compassionate care of our mom, especially her buddy, Wendy. We would also like to thank her primary care physician, Dr. James Cioffi, for the many years that he took such great care of her.

Funeral from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rt.32) Waterford Wednesday at 11:30 am and at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Waterford. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:30 – 11:30 am prior to the funeral.
