Obituary for Pauline L. DeWald (Flood)

WATERFORD Pauline DeWald, 91, of Waterford, NY and York, ME, died April 08, 2023 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, NY. She was born July 1931, in Cooper, Maine, the daughter of the late Bert W. and Eva B. (Seavey) Flood. Raised in Alexander, ME, she attended Calais High School, by working as an au pair, for room and board. After graduation, she worked for a year as secretary to the principal at Calais High. In 1949, she moved to Colonie, NY, staying with the Green family who ran a dairy farm and general store on Route 7.

She worked as a Kelly Temp for a few years while living at the YWCA, before entering NY State service. She worked for NYS DEC Aviation, NYS DEC Wolf Road, NYS Corrections Dept. in Albany, and then retired finally while working at the NYS Retirement system. She met and married Fred H. DeWald of Watervliet in 1951. Fred and Pauline retired to York, ME from Colonie, where they lived for many years. She worked with the York Planning Board as secretary, the York Chamber of Commerce, and at the Salmon River Pottery store.

Mom was an accomplished painter and a member of various art associations for many years. She leaves behind some very nice artwork for her family to treasure. Pauline loved making friends, anything Maine, fresh flowers, fresh seafood, and her daily blueberry muffin.

Pauline was predeceased in August of 2014 by her husband of 63 years, Fred H. DeWald. She was also predeceased by all her siblings, Leona (Horace) Keen, Lawrence (Joan) Flood, Emogene (Dana) Dwelley, Mildred (William) Holst, Louise (Pliney) Frost, and Carolyn (Patrick) Clavette.

She is survived by her sons, Frederick (Doreen) of Cohoes, David of Waterford, and Brian (Paula) of Clifton Park; her two grandchildren Kate (Boris) Berkovich of Walnut Creek, CA, and Andrew DeWald, of Clifton Park, by two great grandchildren, Nina Marie and Julia Rose Berkovich. She is survived also by a large extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as several dear friends. The family thanks her doctors, Samaritan Hospital, and her aide from The Eddy, Cindy, for their care over the last years. Thanks also to the Waterford Rescue Squad.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alexander Grange, 86 Spearin Rd, Alexander, ME 04694, or the Seavey Family Reunion Scholarship, at the same address.2

Funeral services will be Monday April 17, 2023 at 9 am at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., (Rte.32), Waterford. Interment will follow at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Sunday April 16 from 4-7 pm.
