Pat wrote the following in a letter in 2006 to be opened by her husband thinking she would pass away before him:
“Just a note to say goodbye in case I have died before you. You’ll probably live to be 120! I know I drove you crazy since you retired but you have been my sweetheart since I was 15 ,and even through our ups and downs it was always you! All the years you spent at sea, I spent missing you , worrying that you wouldn’t come back to me but you always did. We had some close calls but you never went down with the ship and always returned! The best times of all were when you were on strike or laid off-because then you were all mine.
Please take care of our children and grand children now that I’m not around and make them stay close. I always loved them too much. Just and them were all I ever needed. I hope the rest of your life is happy and healthy. Be well and live to be an old man then come and join me, I’ll be waiting.”
Pat amended her letter two years ago: “ I’m coming home to you! Be prepared. I’m going to get all my missing kisses til God throws us out of Heaven. Can’t wait.
Love Always,
Pat”
