Obituary

WATERFORD Karl H. Schabinger, 96, passed away peacefully at home with his family on Friday December 18, 2020. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Emil and Amelia Schabinger who immigrated from Germany in the early 1900's.

He was a graduate of Troy High School class of 1942. While at Troy High, he acquired an Amateur Radio License (W2MTK) and along with several classmates established a Troy High Amateur Radio Station (W2MXI) which they operated until their graduation. Amateur radio remained a lifelong interest.

Following graduation he served in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. Based in Chabua, India he was part of the team that maintained the radio transmitters supporting the China-Burma-India theater.

Following his military service he applied his radio experience at GE in Schenectady, WFLY in Troy as an engineer and later as general manager, and finally for the NYS Dept of Corrections, maintaining communications gear until his retirement.

Karl was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Alice (Walsh), his parents, brother Emil and sister Rosemarie.

Survivors include his 4 children, Karl (Susan) Schabinger of El Granada CA, Rosemary (late Stanley) Busta of Laguna Hills, CA, Karen Burgess of Royal Palm Beach, FL, and Joanne Schabinger of Glenville who had been his loving caregiver for several years. Karl is also survived by his 6 grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Stephen, Zahara, Moses, and Shelly, and his great-grandson Maxon.

The family would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to Doctor Charles Sulzman and his nurse Sharon who have taken excellent care of him for over 30 years. Karl had great respect and appreciation for all of their experience, attention, and care which allowed him to live a long and healthy life. The family would also like to thank his recent home care nurse, Tricia, who demonstrated professionalism, knowledge and respect while providing gentle care.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford. Interment will follow with military honors in the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery where he will rest alongside Alice.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home Monday from 2-4 p.m. Masks will be required and social distancing and occupancy regulations observed.

Karl had requested that in honor of his wife Alice, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 4 Pine West Plaza #405, Albany, NY 12205.
