Obituary for John M. "Jack" Purcell

WATERFORD Jack Purcell, 74, passed away surrounded by his loving family on December 8th at St. Peter’s Hospital. Son of the late James “Pop” and Marjorie Purcell, Jack was born and raised in Troy and resided in Waterford, NY for most of his life. He is survived by Paula Purcell, his devoted wife of 28 years and their beloved dog, KC; his two daughters Holly (Scott) Cullett and Sarah Purcell; his brother James (Carol) Purcell; brothers-in-law William (Penny) Bailey and Martin (Angel) Bailey, sister-in-law Jacklyn (Joseph) Spring; and his grandchildren Dylan and Abby Cullett; as well as many other extended family members and friends.

Jack had a strong work ethic and was a commercial truck driver at Grand Union for most of his career. In retirement, he was an avid hunter and member of the Band Mill Hunting Club. He also enjoyed boating, hiking, fishing and skiing. Nothing made him happier than spending summers with family and friends at his camp on Sacanadaga Lake. Jack was a good storyteller, had a great sense of humor and could fix almost anything with a few tools and duct tape.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 pm at Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad Street (Rte. 32) in Waterford.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit prior to the service from 12-2 pm.

Jack’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers and staff at St. Peters Hospital for their compassion and assistance in making his final days comfortable and peaceful.

Donations can be made in his memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Alternatively, you may wish to honor Jack by topping off the washer fluid and checking the tire pressure and tread depth on the vehicles of those you love – as he did, at every opportunity.
