Obituary for James F. Norton Jr.

BRUNSWICK– James F. Norton Jr., 94, passed away peacefully in his home on January 15, 2023 with his loving family by his side. Born in Troy on July 24, 1928, he was the son of James and Elizabeth Noonan Norton.

Jim grew up in Troy where he attended Saint Patrick’s School. He was a proud graduate of LaSalle Institute, Troy, class of 1947. While at LaSalle he was a three year varsity athlete in baseball and basketball. He continued to enjoy playing baseball after high school with various leagues and was a member of the Watkins All Star team. For years Jim also enjoyed umpiring local games.

In June 1948, Jim enlisted in the Army National Guard, 27th Division - 105th Infantry. After six years of service, he was honorably discharged in June 1954 as a Staff Sergeant. On January 20, 1952, Jim married the love of his life Theresa Marie Buchanan at St. Augustine’s Church in Troy. They remained devoted to each other, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary before her passing in 2002.

Jim was employed for 38 years at the Charles Freihofer Baking Company in Troy. He loved to tell stories of the years he spent making home deliveries during Freihofer’s horse and wagon era. He would often say he started out with a horse and wagon and retired with a computer in his truck.

Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a man of great faith and was a communicant of St. Augustine’s Church. His family was his world. He firmly believed and would often say, “Family Always First.” He enjoyed simple pleasures – family dinners, vacationing in Maine, daily walks, fishing with his grandson, and trips to Saratoga Race Track each summer.

Jim is survived by his beloved daughters Susanne Norton and Julie (Allen) Bishop, both of Brunswick. He was so proud of his grandchildren Jaclyn Bishop of Burlington, VT and James Bishop of Halfmoon. Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law Catherine Robert of Cohoes.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass on Friday, January 20, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Church in Lansingburgh. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Troy.

The wake will be private at the request of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine’s Preservation Fund in care of the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., Waterford, NY, 12188.
