Obituary for Jack P. Gallagher

TROY John P. Gallagher, 83, of Pickering Lane, passed away Monday March 13, 2023 at his residence as a result of an aggressive prostate cancer. With the grace of God and the help of excellent medical care he was able to enjoy life to the fullest right up to his final hour. Born in Troy he was the son of the late Thomas Gallagher Jr. and Helen Carroll Gallagher. He was a 1958 graduate of LaSalle Institute and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Russell Sage College.

Jack was a teacher in the Lansingburgh School District for 32 years having taught the 4th grade level at the former Powers School and later at Rensselaer Park Elementary School. He retired in1998 but continued to substitute teach until recently. He always appreciated when former students and friends would stop and have a conversation. The summers would find him vacationing at his camp on Saratoga Lake and assisting patrons at the Saratoga Flat Track. Many will recognize him as the kind person who greeted them at the door when they attended services at several area funeral homes.

He was a lifelong communicant of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Troy and served as a lector there and as a member of the Bereavement Committee. He was a proud member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick as well as several other religious, civic and social organizations.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Ella M. Corr Gallagher, his daughter Elizabeth Gallagher and son in law Robert A. Rausch, son Thomas J. Gallagher and daughter in law Tamar and their children Haley, Ashley and Thomas Michael. He is the brother of the late Thomas J. Gallagher III (Mary Sheehan) and Raymond F. Gallagher (Ann Mahar). He is the brother in law of Elizabeth and J. Christopher Callaghan. He is the uncle of Thomas J. Gallagher IV (Donna), Timothy J. Gallagher (Phylisue), John J. Gallagher (Marilyn), Kathleen Bates (Randy), Mary Ann Whiting (Jeff), Dennis Gallagher, John Gallagher (Colleen) and the late Christopher V. Gallagher (Collette Murray survives). Several grandnieces and grandnephews also survive.

Funeral services will be Monday March 20, 2023 at noon at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Ave., Troy. Interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

Relatives and friends may visit with his family at the church on Monday from 10am – noon prior to the funeral Mass.
