Obituary for Edward L. Surprenant

WATERFORD Edward L. Surprenant, 95, formerly of 4th St. passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 16, 2023 at Eddy Village Green. Born in New York City he was the son of the late Leo and Margaret Sloan Surprenant. He was a 1946 graduate of Waterford High School.

Ed was employed for over 37 years in the telephone industry and retired in 1985 from Verizon Co. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and served during World War II.

An active person, Ed could be seen riding his bike all over Waterford and the surrounding area. He was a beekeeper and a member of the Insulator Club as well as being a handyman for his family. He was a devout Catholic and a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Jane Shudt Surprenant who died in 2019 and is survived by his devoted children Edward P. Surprenant (Mary Beth) of Cohoes and Marilyn T. Hanrahan (James) of Latham. He is the brother of Thomas Surprenant (Claudia) of Queens and the late Joan Lutz. He is the proud grandfather of Ryan Hanrahan (Nicole), Jessica Rigabar (Joe), Dylan Surprenant and Chelsea Quezada (Tony) and great grandfather of Jack, Brady, Emily, Aiden and Mia.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11am from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St (Rte. 32), Waterford and at 11:30 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waterford.

Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 – 11 am prior to the funeral.
