Obituary for Bernice C. Niles

WATERFORD Bernice C. Niles, 82, passed away at home on February 22nd, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Troy on October 16th, 1939 she was the daughter of the late Bernadette Nadeau and Royal Niles. Bernice graduated from Keveny Memorial Academy at 16 years old in 1956 and continued her education, graduating from St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. She went on to achieve her Master’s degree in nursing from Russell Sage College. Nursing was her vocation of passion and she dedicated more than fifty years of her life in service as a registered nurse and mentor, going on to become a Professor of Nursing at several renowned colleges across the country to give back to the profession she loved.

Bernice was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Parish. She was a life-long lover of travel, puzzles, and reading. In her free time she knitted and crocheted hats, blankets, and sweaters for gifts and donations. She will be remembered for her intelligence, humor, selflessness, and constant support.

She was the loving mother of Sheila Searles of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Mollnow of Murrels Inlet, SC, Mark (Angelina) Searles of Halfmoon, MaryBeth Searles Woodard of Waterford and her late son Jeffrey Searles. She is survived by her seventeen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Leo (Elaine) Niles of Sacramento, California, Larry Nadeau of Voorhesville, Leon and Gilbert Nadeau of Clifton Park, Beth Nadeau of Grafton, Beatrice (Scott) Peterson of Waterford and the late Royal Niles and Barbara McNulty, Billy, Tommy, Jake, Ducky, and Chick Nadeau. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be Friday at 9:30 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 119 Broad St. Waterford. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Waterford.

Relatives and friends may visit at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rt.32), Waterford on Thursday from 4-7 pm.
